Is there not a Natural History museum in town? I don't actually know now that you mention it. I guess I assumed since there were so many museums (musea?) that there would have to be one. Kids like Dinosaurs, true, but could be cool to focus on the giant aquatic dinosaurs (some of which swam in the area back in the day so the kids might connect more).

Isn't the disaster response building supposed to go on the site of the old Red Cross building or did they decide to move further inland? I lost track of that story a while back.

I had not heard about anything going in the American Red Cross building. I thought it was just sitting empty. But, if that's true, then that site clearly would not work, and I'll have to be on the lookout for other property.

I'm not sure if we have a museum of natural history, but if we do, I don't think it's devoted primarily to dinosaurs. I like your idea of having an aquatic theme to it (an obvious tie-in to the port city). I have to admit, though, I'm partial to the flying dinosaurs!

I just think that downtown needs more family oriented things to do to give families a reason to come to downtown on the weekends, and to give visitors and tourists things to do throughout the day. The business component of downtown is there, and residential is quickly catching up. But, other than bars and restaurants, there's not much downtown for families, except during special events such as the chili cookoff.

This is somewhat off topic, but I just read that a German automotive publication has reported that Huntsville is the favored choice of the VW management board for the new VW plant! If true, great news for Huntsville and all of AL. Congratulations to all!! Maybe Mobile be next on the list for an automobile plant?

It's good for Mobile in that they seemed interested in using the port. Not sure how they'd do that and to what extent, but anything that drives up the port usage is good for the city.

I'm hoping for more diversified industries. It's great to have all the auto companies, but we do need to make sure we don't set ourselves up as another Michigan.

Mostly all the auto plants in Michigan are in the Detroit Metro accounting for tens of thousand jobs, which the rest of the state lacks, hence, it has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. Detroit is doing pretty good except for wrestling with crime. In Alabama, the auto plants are spread out helping all corners of the state. I would really like for the state to recruit more jobs to the Black Belt area of Alabama where they are truly struggling. Poverty is pitiful, people hungry, and the unemployment is amongst the highest in the state.

It would be nice to have a zoo, aquarium, a dinosaur museum, or even a Chinatown all downtown...Okay maybe the last is a little far-fetched like Birmingham having the 2020 Olympics but land is too limited. All of it really can fit in the land where Orange Grove once stood. Mobile Housing Board really needs to reconsider dealing with the property, the possibilities could be endless. Three Mile Creek runs thru the back of the property and could be incorparated in some kind of master plan. Maybe one of us should write the editor of the Press-Register to be put in Sunday's paper?? Wonder if the group working on the new Master Plan for Old Mobile considering this site...it is in the plan area.

Anyways.........i never really liked starbucks. I prefer the local coffee houses over the commercial brand of starbucks. Starbucks lost its luster ever since it put a store on ever corner.

About that orange grove land....i think something like Savanah river landing would be pretty cool there. Ya'll look up that project. Its in Savanah and I would like to see something like that here.

Yeah seattle is larger than Mobile and seattle isn`t capatialized for a reason, and you never here people talk about that city it`s a mystery i`m shure more people know more about little economicaly depressed Mobile than seattle. Mobile is the city of perpetual potential not whining. 2) Mobile, AL's GDP is 10 Billion while Seattle's is 186 Billion

9,000$ less than the national median is what I said, not that it WAS 9,000$. By national standards that is ED when you don't consider the growth factor. It doesn't take into account cost of living either, which I'll fully admit I did not delve into.

I've read the Mobile wiki page-- I had to actually enter the whole name and state! I haven't lived in a city where that has happened yet. They're two different cities, though, so coming around to say "NYAH, UR PATHETIK" is pointless.

These are mere rivalry posts and drudging up person vs. person comments as though it was a city vs. city thread is getting things nowhere.

I have attempted to ignore the mudslinging (mostly unnecessary) on this thread, but it is becoming increasingly difficult, in light of the overwhelming negative posts about Mobile or Seattle. Can we all agree to just leave it at this:

Both Seattle and Mobile are great in their own right, each plays an integral role in the American economy, and, arguably most importantly, both are AMERICAN cities. Seattle is an established, metropolitan city where many people live and where countless large and small businesses are based. I've also heard that it is a great city to visit, although I've never personally been there.

Similarly, Mobile is an established city, with a rich history and where many midsized and small businesses are located (although we don't have businesses the size of Microsoft, our businesses employ American workers all the same, and contribute to the American economy as well). Its port also plays a fundamental role in America's economy. I can also assure you that Mobile is a great place to visit.

In sum, both cities have positive and negative points, but both have bright futures. In that respect, I hope we can get back to celebrating economic development in Mobile, which is the purpose of this thread. If visitors from Seattle want to learn what is happening in Mobile, and want to make constructive comments, then you are welcome to do so, at least in my opinion. Otherwise, let's quit the mudslinging!
