In the interior cities with pre-WWII skyscraperps, those first high rises were usually built with zero parking and as a result after the war nearby blocks were demolished for parking garages. The big department stores also bought up nearby blocks for parking garages often with no or little street retail in the garages. This is part of the reason why the old office towers are considered Class B office space.

Does anyone know if they started on or where still planning on connecting the Bryant Park 6th ave subway station with the Times Square subway station with a tunnel under 42nd built by BOA?
jmeckleborg, you can't use NY and compare them with those other cities. For one, there's subway lines galore running underneath most of Manhattan. Until those other cities have more mass transit options, you can't use NY's model to make your case for no parking garages.
Argue for more mass transit development, then once that is in place, then you can advocate for less or no parking. Otherwise you are going to lose your argument. You see what I'm getting at?
scruffy, I'm sure the BofA people have already done their tunnel part, now it's up to the MTA to do their part but as we all know, that might be the most difficult part.
^less parking is fundamental to the mass transit sale though imo... the cost savings of having to buy less land and build less parking and the inevitable visual improvement in that makes transit worth it.
I don't think you are understanding. I am not saying mass transit and garages should coexist. You must have one if you don't have the other. If don't have mass transit, you're going to need parking. If you have mass transit, then you can put a stop to parking.

Wow, this building is turning out to be quite an addition to the Midtown Skyline. I really like its duel-shard of glass design. def works.
I may be in the minority here but im not crazy about the Verizon's new facade. I actually liked the old one better. it was old school and would have offered a nice contrast to BoA tower's ultra modern glass curtain wall.
o well...BoA looks sharp. Another great addition to NYC !

Are they actually going to finish this building by the end of the decade? Seriously, they've been working on the crown for only God knows how long! Sorry about the rant, but ever since the accident last October, it seems that there has been almost zero progress on the upper floors and exteriors other than the topping off of the project last December.
I hung out in Bryant Park after work yesterday before meeting friends at Koi for drinks and just sat there and stared at how beautiful this building is.
