225 W VanBuren - Jan 28

From above Full Set

Piles being dug out

Digger outer thing - like a long thin shovel that scrapes the soil from around the piles so it can be scooped out.

The piles are then trimmed down

Rebar collar ?

In the cage ( notice how tall the forms are - a thick pad )

One set that is done

This is the block I wish had just been completely leveled for a park...

Apparently, Marriot and Ian Schrager have plans to create a chain called "Edition". One in Chicago is planned soon.

I believe that this will be the hotel at 150 E. Ontario.

Is there a rendering or artist's description of it?

^ Interesting. Would that be considered 3 towers, or just 1 with 3 different "sections"?

The wave of plush hotels planned for downtown Chicago is swelling yet again, with hoteliers Ian Schrager and Marriott International Inc. announcing Tuesday that their newly developed boutique brand will be named "Edition" and will debut in eight locales, including along the Magnificent Mile.

Chicago-based Monaco Development LLC is developing the 250-room hotel as part of a 50-story tower planned for 150 E. Ontario, according to Neil Gehani, company president. Construction on the $240 million project will begin this year, with an opening expected in 2011

^Just saw that article on the tribune website too.

I think its good news. I was beginning to wonder if 150 E Ontario would ever happen. Its been in site prep for quite a while now. While Im not fond of the design that much, I think it will add some depth to that part of the skyline.

spyguy, this 501 N clark hotel project is at the southeast corner of grand & clark, correct? that's currently just a big old waste of space surface lot.

i don't recall ever hearing about this project before, is it new to this forum?

in any event, the design seems a bit strange, but i LOVE all that street energizing retail at the base. together with the river north center projects 2 blocks south, this once depressing stretch of clark is really starting to shape up. and if they ever bulldoze that damn post office across the street from this proposal and turn it into a park, then we're talking about truly changing the character of this section of river north for the better.

Yes Steely, but it's also extending to the south where there is an existing historic Italianate building. So much for Friedman Properties' "commitment to preservation."

I find this unacceptable because the site is roughly 80% vacant lots, and they are branding this as three hotels - meaning that separate structures, which could preserve the historic building, would be no skin off their backs.

Last, the architecture is deplorable. The stupid wave thing is tacky, tacky, tacky - a lame attempt to rip off Three Museum Park, and who knows why you would want to rip that off anyway. Where is the spirit of Gyo Obata in this office?

Meh, it's not beautiful but these also aren't luxury hotels so you cannot expect to have the finest architecture possible. But if you have complaints, I'll be more than willing to post some McSam hotels for your enjoyment to prove my point

Updated rendering

Quote:
http://www.uptownupdate.com/2008/01/parking-complextheatre-and-high-rise.html

It's been a while since the community meeting for the "Theatre District Lofts Phase II and III was held this past August. Residents were presented with the plans for the construction of a high-rise and nearby parking complex that will feature a movie theatre (to be run by "Meadow Theatre Group"), retail, and restaurants at Lawrence and Winthrop. We wondered what the status of this project was and are happy to report it is moving right along. The parking lot across from the Aragon has been purchased although the closing for this property took a bit longer than expected. Developer Jim Gouskos is moving forward on the projects and is confident that the neighborhood will benefit from this complex. The 20 story highrise has a new look that we think looks pretty sharp. We are working on getting updated renderings of the parking complex/theatre and will post them as soon as they become available.

Found some updated renderings for 1260 West Madison, which everybody in the West Loop seems to hate. It is an extremely urban design that we'd be lucky to get in River North or South Loop, let alone all the way out at Madison and Throop.

Also, a much-needed redesign for Flair Tower - still PoMo, but much better than before.
