Wow, that's pretty amazing. To bad you can't look up in these cities, to get the full effect, but it's amazing nonetheless.

Must be an interesting privacy issue. Anyone see any weird things while cruising Chicago in street view?

I'm going to guess that the diagonal face was to capture winter sun, and summer sun.

summer sun is not a problem on a southfacing atrium if you have appropriate ventilation options. It could create a great stack effect every 10 floors to get some much needed air movement, and eliminate a need for significant air conditioning, because 80 degree days are fine if you're in the shade with a comfortable air flow, esp if plants are growing in these atriums improving air quality.

just the pressure in many high rises from ground floor to top floor would create an appropriate stack effect. i.e. the giant doors on the ground floor of sears, that keeps the stack effect from happening in shafts within the building. the stack effect in sears is enough to carry a chair with someone in it, up the elevator shaft faster than the express skydeck elevators, if I remember my obscure trivia correctly

CNN Money.com has ranked South Loop and Streeterville third and fourth, respectively, on its list of the "35 Best Places to Retire."

Best Places to Retire 2007

Best neighborhoods to retire

If life after work means more than a beach chair, the best place to retire might be the big city. We looked at 30 of the nation's largest metro areas and found the right neighborhoods for you.

WLCO to the rescue!

Now here's a quote that's sure to make all of you very happy on this grey Wednesday morning... concerning the Sundance Theatre and tower project on the West Side:

"The reviews were tepid. Eric Sedler, president of the West Loop Community Organization and a member of the group, said the developers "have a long way to go" to win local support. Fioretti, who was not at the meeting but was briefed about it, used almost the same language.

...

Since then, suspicions have grown that the prospect of a multiplex showing independent films has been used as sweetener to get the neighbors to swallow a bigger project than they'd otherwise like. "We would love to see first-class retail in the West Loop," Sedler said, "but at the same time we have to see something that benefits the area."

... because, of course, the only conceivable thing that could benefit the area is less than 10 stories.

Curtains for Sundance?

^ This project is just too important to the city to not get built. The res component will likely be modified but the most important component - the theatre/retail will get built.

At this point, I have too little energy to care about residential development in the west loop. I just want there to be some retail and entertainment.

I agree. Residential will follow. Perhaps he can get off by building one of the 25 story towers and not two.

Panel to hear 2 downtown apartment proposals
By Alby Gallun

Commissioners will consider Chicago-based JDL Development’s plan for a high-rise at 212-232 W. Illinois St. that would encompass 190 apartments, 170 parking spaces and 11,500 square feet of retail.

...Also on the agenda for the commission’s Oct. 18 meeting is a plan by San Antonio-based Lynd Co. to build a 32-story tower at 161 W. Kinzie St. The project would comprise 263 apartments, 25,000 square feet of retail space and 213 parking spots.

Not sure why the JDL project was never added to the front page or Emporis, but here is a rendering anyway.
