Good to see that China is removing tariffs from lobsters and crab.

This should mean a big boost to air freight out of Moncton.

Last year we had at least 50-60 heavies land at YQM bound for China.

At what cost though? Time will tell. Last year Carney said China was our biggest threat.

Times change.

Right now China is a paragon of stability and peace compared to certain other superpowers in the world.

Indeed. At this point the US is arguably the bigger threat to the world.

China doesnt change. They are still what they were last year when they were our biggest threat. Their interference in our elections should alarm everyone. I would not be championing this agreement at all. Especially for a few lobster flights a year. And im an avgeek who loves to go see them.

I have to agree. China hasn't changed. All that has changed is that our biggest friend has joined China in the "not friendly" column.

This deal hasn't won us anything new.....just got us back what we lost when China (once again) decided to play hardball with our Ag exports In return we've opened ourselves up to state subsidized auto imports to the detriment of our auto sector.

How many times have they attacked our exports when they wanted something ? Any bets about how long before they want something else and canola gets hit again? a year? Two years? You can bet the answer won't be "never".

And our auto industry isn't subsidized by the government? Either directly or indirectly?

Agree 100%. Millions of Chinese Canadians fled the totalitarian regime in China for good reason and are still being targeted by China while living in Canada. Moving closer to this regime is a mistake especially at the detriment to our already beleaguered auto sector.

I know most ppl on these threads dont like to admit it because of their disdain for the big bad orange man ( their words not mine ) south of us, but the US is and will always be our largest trading partner and closest ally. That will never change. People are quick to forget all the shady shit China has done to this country in the last 20-25 years.

Exactly which is why this move makes no sense. Why invite subsidized Chinese EVs to compete with our heavily subsidized auto industry?

A very different take regarding Carney cozying-up to Xi. "Looking like a supplicant is undignified."

Mhm, there is a politics thread on this sub, as well as multiple threads on the main boards for this discussion.

Definitely glad the lobster flights are back though.

I’ve never bought NB lobster in China before, but I have bought some Digby scallops and Newfoundland capelin.

What? A "paragon of stability"? Are you out of your mind? The following is just from 2026 alone.

Taiwan pressure / military intimidation

China ran more drills and incursions near Taiwan, because apparently peace needs regular “practice invasions.”

Jan 17: A Chinese surveillance drone reportedly entered Taiwanese airspace for the first time over Pratas/Dongsha—just “checking the weather,” obviously.

Cyber espionage / hacking campaigns

China-linked hackers (per reporting) targeted U.S. government/policy people with malware/phishing, because why have diplomacy when you can have spyware?

U.S. House committee staff email systems reportedly got compromised—totally normal behaviour for a “responsible global stakeholder.”

Tech & infrastructure leverage / pressure on the EU

China pushed back on EU “de-risking” efforts around critical infrastructure vendors, because Europe trying not to be dependent is clearly the real threat here.

South China Sea coercion (more “ongoing vibe” than fresh 2026 headlines I guess)

Continued intimidation posture in the region, because nothing says “stability” like making your neighbours constantly wonder what you’ll do next.

A paragon of stability compared to the Fascist States of America under the dictatorial leadership of Herr Adolf Drumpf.

I should have been more specific I guess.

China is certainly much less of an imminent threat to the continued existence of Canada as an independent nation state than the USA is, at least under the current MAGA/Nazi "leadership" of Drumpf.

Drumpf is a deranged malignant narcissistic megalomaniac sociopath who has imperialist intent to exert absolute control over the entire western hemisphere. He intends to destroy NATO and upend the world order. He is a stooge of Putin and intends to carve the world up into spheres of influence controlled by the USA, Russia and China. If the Greenland anschluss is a success, then Canada will be next. He will want at least the Arctic Archipelago (for "national security") and BC, AB and YT as a "land bridge to Alaska". What he really wants however is access to natural resources, liebensraum, and to have a legacy of imperial conquest so that he will be remembered for centuries to come. In his own deluded mind, he fancies himself as a modern day Julius Caesar.

So, yes, compared to Drumpfian America, I would take China any day of the week.......

now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

You are more intelligent than this, but as has been pointed out, this topic is for another thread.

Back to the subject…

Here are some interesting fantasy renders based on my conceptual Sketchup models for YSJ I posted a few weeks ago, as well as some public feedback I provided on the land use plan that shows 3000-foot runways, space for a hotel, business park and provisional space for an entirely new terminal.

MonctonRad doesn’t have Trump derangement syndrome lol.

Some of you people are being willfully ignorant/obtuse about the economic reality and opportunities that exist to increase our ties and cooperation with China… even if we don’t agree on anything.

China is clearly a more stable partner for Canada at the moment than the US.

Thankfully our PM is both an economist and a pragmatist… his decision to reset the relationship with China was highly logical and economically prudent. Some of you get way to emotional when it comes to China, but I bet very few of you have actually been there and even know much about their economy beyond stuff heard from some very biased sources…

Wow! MonctonRad has a near terminal case of TDS! When the cheap seats of Moncton are against you, you know you're on the right track.

It seems to be that the ones who are Trump apologists are always those who have axes to grind. The people with the biggest chips on their shoulders. You know who you all are.
