They already started that project?

In May 2021, Phase 1 of the project was completed with the opening of the Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Surgical Centre, featuring 16 advanced operating rooms and a 40-bay pre- and post-operative recovery area. Once phase 2 is finished, the surgical centre will have 32 operating rooms and 78 perioperative bays, along with upgraded infrastructure, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), electrical and plumbing systems. With these new, flexible operating rooms, health-care teams will be able to increase the number of operating room hours available and surgeries performed.

imagine the logistics of moving all of those units somewhere while construction taking place

There is some centralization for lower mainland HAs, usually it's under the PHSA umbrella for infrastructure. That looks to be the first phase of Emergency and more patient beds.

That *may* be done by 2030, next would be Centennial by ~2035 at best.

Of all things, we really shouldn't burden our hospitals with heritage retention.

also I find it ODD that the plan we are all talking about makes NO MENTION of the new towers/office space/etc to be built across 12th ave at Oak ..... no mention of it even in the maps ..... like that land is not part of the hospital lands yet the lands to the east of it also across 12th is part of it as per the map...... ODD......

Those lands are owned by the VGH + UBC Hospital Foundation which is a separate charitable entity, VGH doesn't have any ownership of those lands.

FUCB (VGH Campus) includes those lots in the Broadway Plan outline for the large & unique site.

Support the expansion of the VGH Campus and the BC Cancer Centre to meet long-term institutional space needs.
Consider building heights up to 106.7 m (350 ft.) or up to the underside of Queen Elizabeth Park View sections 3.2.1-3.2.3
(if more restrictive).

The Broadway Plan outline also includes the former Nurses Residence condos and the privately held properties on West 10th (wasn't there a midrise office block proposed along there?) - so those are not all strictly speaking owned by VGH.

Just found this study from 2024 about VTOL landings at VGH (to Victoria General)

A case study was conducted for the site of an existing
helipad at Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada. The site was selected in
support of a future use case of the existing helipad for
VTOL takeoffs and landings in support of the delivery
of cancer isotopes from Vancouver General Hospital to
Victoria General Hospital, in Victoria, British Columbia,
decreasing delivery time compared to surface
transportation and as a cost-effective alternative
to the use of helicopters and other transportation
alternatives. The site is on the outskirts of a downtown
core where low rise buildings surround the taller
buildings of the hospital campus.

I often wondered about those condos on 12th across from VGH that included nurses residence suites (and there was apparently a tunnel underneath to the hospital?) and whether long term plans could have an influence on land value there.
