The thought does keep me up at night especially given Carney's appalling French proficiency, since as you already know my life is pretty much intertwined between the two solitudes.

This threat of conservatives axing these programs can now end.

What is unknown is if these programs will be expanded or not.
The convergence of Conservative and Liberal policies continues apace. Maybe we could just flip a coin?

And I am sure you are sophisticated enough to know that even just having good French isn't enough to effectively play that role in such a situation.

Latest Leger poll shows the LPC at 44%. The CPC seem stuck at 38%, with the NDP just in total collapse right now at 6%. Bloc also down to 5%.

Meanwhile Jagmeet Singh seems to think that proving that he's one of the bros is the path back to respectability? "I'm glad you're here for my housing announcement, but first watch while I almost die performing these two dips".

Good observation. And yet many would have us believe that this is an epic battle between absolute good and absolute evil. If we dare question that we get labelled Poilievre sycophants in spite of never expressing any support for him.

Seems like he's a critical care doc? Has likely saved countless Canadian lives, but yes let's impeach his patriotism over an inoffensive tweet he made 4 years ago.

The partisan smoke conceals a pretty small policy fire, istm.

Aren't his political views more important than what his medical training enabled him to be paid to do which yes is of great benefit to society?

If you think our safety is so important that vaccine mandates are essential we might be worried about a doctor who even before widespread vaccination was opposing precautionary policies. I'm personally not a fan of this over cautious approach to the pandemic or most issues but the overwhelming majoirty of Canadians are and especially the married middle class women in suburbs that will decide this election.

I don't know of his vaccine views until I searched a bit more. Was going to edit my post, but too late.

These are the types of Conservative candidates that re-assure me that the "progressive" conservative party will not make a return and I am terrified if they actually form government.

The polling intentions of voters respective to election results from the past 2 elections popular vote results.

Cons won popular vote last election with 34%. They are currently polling at around 37%

Libs won the last election with popular vote of only 31.8% of popular vote.

So… 37% 2025 polling results > 34% con 2021 election popular vote > 31% Lib 2021 election results.

I understand the point spread they have lost in current polling. But I’m not talking about that. I am talking about current polling respective to past election results.

Compared to who we've had since, and the current candidates, Chrétien was the best PM overall.

Fair enough. I thought it was obvious when someone says they want to move to Florida in April 2021 as a refugee. Guess it could be mask mandates but that's even crazier.

Strauss is also an antivaxx nutcase, who has a history of burning bridges with employers. So it's on brand for him to want to abandon his country.

"When the pandemic started in 2020, Archer and Strauss disagreed about scientific literature on COVID-19 and public health measures, but Archer remained professional.

The defence points to Strauss's social media posts about COVID-19 that include him saying:
  • "I would sooner give my children Covid-19 than a McDonald's happy meal."
  • "Just listening to science is naïve – what to do about Covid depends on values more than facts."
  • "If you drive your kids to school and worry about them getting COVID there then you are bad at math."

The defence states Strauss' peers said his comments were undermining the work done to save people's lives while medical learners called his comments "offensive and discriminatory." He also tried to bypass screening at the hospital, the statement of defence says.

"These behaviours occurred at a time when COVID-19 was incurable and vaccines were not yet available," reads the court document.

Despite several meetings with Strauss that weren't punitive but had people discuss their concerns, his "harmful commentary" continued and he didn't make clear that his posts were his opinion and not that of his employer.

This points out how little movement is needed for massive changes in results. Even a 40% Liberal 37% Con 7 % NDP 6% Bloc is almost certainly a majority government and it would still mean people switched from the Liberals to Cons but more people switched from NDP to Liberal. Probably 80% of us outside of Quebec probably voted the same as last time.

Yeah. French in Quebec has been on the decline for my entire adult lifetime and the trends aren’t looking about to stop.

It’s intellectually dishonest to take centuries and plot an average, when what matters are the current trends.

Yep indeed. Even battle hardened Chrétien barely survived the near apocalyptic event, and Carney is no Chrétien.
