Carney’s a wonk and has no doubt been devouring article on what went wrong for Harris and the Dems. That doesn’t mean he really identies or can reach those young white males.

What was wrong with Harris is her focus was on Trump. You were hard press to know what she stood for because all she did is talk about Trump. Yes, Trump was evil.

Carney is focused on a path forward. It is conservatives that are being negative.

This government deserves to go for it's virtue signaling nonsense, economic suicide strangling our resource sector, over spending that wasn't strategic. But the idea that it's social policy (the well thought out part like daycare for example) that was balanced with modest tax increases destroyed our economy and thus reversing it will rescue out economy is dubious.

We will have to see if Carney can promise to get back to balance (the rest of his caucus is another matter) but we know a Poilievre government is likely to move in the other direction and not just in harsh cuts to the disadvantaged but also cutting for ideological reasons programs that more than pay for themselves.
Unfortunately this is how political and ideological shifts tend to play out. The baby gets thrown out with the bath water.

Too bad incumbents never listen to calls for change or even tweaks to what they are doing. Instead they bear down and insist that every single thing they do is 100% right. And insult those who dare question them, often calling them all sorts of names.

So this is what we get, sadly.

Conservatives have been in campaign mode for the past 2 years. Pierre has billed hundreds of thousands in travel for his mini-Trump rallies.

We've been all told over and over and over again:
Axe the tax
Everything is Trudeau's fault
Canada is broken
Stop the crime
Secure the border
Canada first

They change slogans, attacks and smears more than I change underwear.

Cost of living has increased everywhere, including in the U.S, as has homelesness, food bank usage, bankruptcies, etc. These problems are not uniquely the fault of Justin Trudeau and the Liberals, though of course it's fair to criticize some of the ways in which the government has fallen short of addressing them. It would be great if we could talk about the shortcomings of the current government (which are real and in some cases significant) without succumbing to the Trudeau-theory-of-everything, which holds that all bad things in Canada, real or imagined, can be directly traced to the PM and/or the Liberal Party.

Also, suicides aren't up. The number of suicides in Canada peaked in 2019 and has been considerably lower ever since; if you look at the population-adjusted rate it's declined slightly.

I don't know. The stats on drug use are probably inconclusive. Looks to be around the same before and after. https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/canadian-alcohol-drugs-survey/2019-summary.html#a3

Suicide rates look to be about the same. But if you go back to the 90s they are down.

Bankruptcies dipped in 2020, 2021, 2022 and now with that 25% increase are back to where they were for the decade before.

Immigration is the province’s responsibility now eh?

Had no idea they were in charge of Canadas sovereignty. Why do we have a federal government.

Drugs are federal
Cost of living is mostly federal
Suicides are a shared jurisdiction
Hospitals are shared
Money laundering is federal
Gun use is federal
Food banks are tied to the cost of living so mostly federal
Homelessness is provincial, except when related to the cost of living
Bankruptcies are federal

based on your categorization - get rid of provinces - they do nothing.

It's my understanding that immigration targets are set in collaboration with the provinces, so it's not as straightforward as dumping all the responsibility on the federal government. Increasing the number of international students in Ontario has been supported fully by the provincial government here, but they have largely dodged the consequences.

Harris’ problems were much more fundamental than that: when campaigning on her own merits against various other Dems (2020 primary), she failed resoundingly.

Biden’s obstination to hang on is the reason why the Dems had to settle for a bad candidate rather than have an open primary. At least the LPC is avoiding that mistake: Trudeau’s replacement will be someone who can at least win a leadership race.

The LPC can be reasonably blamed for the difference in increase, versus the approximate average of our peers. Homelessness here has increased like 300% in a few short years thanks to JT’s pet Scheme of Landlord Enrichment, how does that compare to the US and others?

Unless the gloves actually come off in the debates....hard to really call this a race.

Compared to Harris’ coronation last summer, it is definitely an actual race. That was my point

I agree it’s not the most exciting or competitive race, I never said that it was!

There are lots of things you can blame on the provinces. Transit, highways, schools, universities. Those just weren’t on the list you tried to pin on the provinces.

The federal government unilaterally raised the allowed work on a student visa from 20 hours per week to unlimited. They didn’t consult the provinces or anyone else. This caused people who wanted to work in Canada but didn’t otherwise qualify for provincial and federal immigration programs to do the logical thing and sign up for a minimalist post secondary program and then work full time. This cause the population to drastically increase, boosting inflation and making a mess of the housing situation.

Trying to pin this one on the provinces is pretty nonsensical.
