He's certainly to the centre in the Paul Martin vein where he understands wealth is generated by the private sector but wants to harness it and micro-manage it a bit to as his book says make for a more humane society. He absolutely thinks climate change is the most pressing issue which Canadians have pretty clearly rejected as they suffer from what in world terms is a pretty minor decline in their standard of living and let Polievre blame the carbon tax. While the carbon tax didn't do that any real solution in Canada would lead to a much greater decline than we saw from 2019-2023.

It's shocking that Singh has been given so much leeway. I guess having turfed Mulclair who was never a true NDPer so quickly they needed a period of stablity but you have to wonder where we would be if someone like Rachel Notley was NDP leader by 2023.

I prefer Singh to Mulcair, but I still can’t believe Mulcair was Jack Layton’s successor… it should have been Nathan Cullen. I think the party would have been in a much better place right now… but his French was “un petit peu” 😅

Regardless of the poll results, I am 100% on Team NDP and always have been. Sweet leader, ,sour leader doesn't matter. Corporatism is clearly a dead end no matter what face represents it...

Arrow Liberal Frontrunner Mark Carney visits Canada’s fourth largest port in Saint John, NB

Port Saint John, New Brunswick recently had quite an important visitor, the man likely to become Canada’s next Prime Minister, Mark Carney. Great to see him come to Saint John and speak to the important of Port Saint John to Canada’s national interests at this critical time in our history. Carney also had an event later in the evening in Uptown Saint John.

Saint John is not only Canada’s fourth largest port by total tonnage, it hosts Canada’s largest oil refinery that exports 80% of its refined products to the United States. While Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre want to talk about build housing on our ports and doing nothing about it, Mark Carney wants to build them into world class cities of commerce and industry.

It’s great to see a the likely next PM visit “the Port City” and speak to the importance of ports in Canada’s trading future. Now is the time to build it.

Back when I was doing the Big Four thing, we were always joking that every major M&A or strategic review was basically down to questionable analysis by a bunch of unusually hot 20 year olds. I guess Elmo is now just pushing things to peak absurdity — late stage management consulting.

(Btw I had no idea Saint John was the second largest port. I would have guessed Montreal. Pretty neat)

Keep disrespecting the sovereignty of Canada, and mention how much of a fan he is of Pierre Poilievre.

Does that translate into Official Opposition for the Liberals, or would the Bloc still be in play?

Saint John was once the second largest Canadian port by tonnage. These days Montreal and Sept Iles both handle more cargo. So does Quebec, some years.

I imagine if Saint John was still ahead, it would have been a matter of time before Montreal surpassed it as a result of their expansion in the works in Contrecoeur. I didn't realize the Port of Sept-Iles was that large though. That said, it's one of the few deep water ports in the region.

Looks like the stats I referenced were a bit outdated.

Montreal and Sept-Iles seem to be ahead of Saint John now in total tonnage, and Montreal, of course, remains the second largest container port, after Vancouver. Port Saint John’s total tonnage remains dominated by liquid bulk, but it’s currently investing in a major push to expand its container operations up to 800k TEUS and possibly beyond. Which would maybe be enough to catch back up with Montreal in terms of total tonnage.

Coincidentally, 14.4 hectares of Port Saint John’s prime harbourfront is unavailable for container operations, holding back Port SJ from going beyond 800k TEUS, because they are occupied by Montreal owned AIM's seaside scrapyard which is currently in legal limbo due to multiple worker deaths, a major fire in 2023 which led to a region wide state of emergency to be called due to toxic air pollution, and a 40 year lease that both the Port and province of NB would like to terminate. AIM's CEO, Herb "I'm not God" Black, is still trying to fight for AIM to reopen their disastrous facilities on the Saint John harbourfront.

If either Energy East got built, or an LNG export facility was added in addition to the current LNG import facility, I think Saint John would likely secure the second place spot for total tonnage among Canadian ports for decades.

These #s and the Liberals have no leader... interesting. Carney should receive a nice bump once confirmed as leader.
