Nothing listed here for that address. Although these are stores, not a warehouse. There's nothing listed pre-1925.

Maybe you're thinking of this one?

No idea, but fun fact, that building originally had 5 floors: https://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/sites/bonaccordblock.shtml

If that was a former Safeway warehouse or not, yes that's the building that was demolished for the new build.

Very cool photo's. That is obviously why they are proposing a 3 storey addition...much easier when the foundation is already built for it.

Three story addition to Mitchell Fabric building? Interesting...I hadn't heard about that. Presumably affordable rental housing?

I believe they applied for and we’re anticipating HAF but didn’t receive it in the first round.

Yeah, it's about $15m and they are short some of the funds.

Thanks for all the info re: Mitchell Fabric building. I did not know it was once 5 storeys! Must've been a fire? Edit: Cripes they took the top 4 floors down due to taxation.

Those street scenes from years ago are severely depressing compared to today..

Cost of reopening Portage and Main to pedestrians rises by $8M
Only 1 construction company bid on work, which has tight completion timelines
Bartley Kives · CBC News · Posted: Nov 01, 2024 5:00 AM CDT | Last Updated: 9 hours ago

The cost of reopening Portage and Main to pedestrians will cost the City of Winnipeg $8 million more than it expected because the only construction company interested in the work bid higher than expected, the city's public works department says in a new report.

City council voted in March to reopen the intersection, which has been closed to above-ground pedestrian traffic for more than four decades. The city then sought a company capable of completing the work by July 1, 2025.

The sole bidder, M.D. Steele Construction Ltd., offered to do the work for $16.1 million, plus GST, engineering manager Brad Neirinck wrote in a report to council's public works committee.

I was just reading the clerks report. IMO they shouldnt award contracts like this with 1 bidder. But waiting until the last second makes it difficult to keep schedule, especially when the transit plan implementation is only 8 months away.

This whole thing has been handled badly as we all know.

Also, they're doing it in winter which I'm sure didn't help with the cost. MD Steele struck gold haha.

I bid a lot of work for the city. I'm better off not bidding if I don't think it can be done in a profitable way. I would bet MD put a lot of money to cover penalty days in their bid, because of the impossible schedule.

It's an ambitious and fairly unique project. Timeline... weather... logistics... labour shortages... it's like being set up to fail. It's a lot of pressure and I don't blame them for increasing the price. I actually applaud them for even daring to take it on. It will be interesting to see how this project plays out.

Its more interesting than that. In the 1920s, the owner David Ripstein fought the city on his property assessment which he argued was too high given the realestate of the area which was already percieved as blighted (much like today). The city wouldn't back down, so he took the additional stories off out of spite, basically a giant F-you to the city.

My take is that Gillingham just wants to get it done and not have to deal with P & M for the next 2 years. If he can do that, establish the BRT stop near that corner and start the transfer of bus routes from Graham to portage he can show some progress on the rapid transit plans before the next municipal election in, I believe 2026.

Add to that the progress that we'll hopefully see on Portage Place, Weweneh, and Sutton Place and Gillingham can, legitimately, point to progress during his first term as Mayor.
