I know it's probably covered under the transit fantasy thread but what exactly would a proposed extension of any Skytrain line look like into the West End? Or are talking something like a streetcar down Denman and Robson? Or a one way loop around Denman, Davie, Robson and ???

Maybe the first step before a streetcar upgrade for the 5/6 would be figuring out how to put an artic on that route

This is my dream alignment.

Why it makes sense:
  • The Expo Line sees high frequencies, so a trip to Waterfront at most for the average rider will be a 6 minute wait, and most of the riders drop off by Burrard anyways
  • Only 1.7km, and can easily be stacked cut and cover
  • The businesses on the streets it would go down wouldn't be affected much (like on Cambie with the Canada Line) so cut and cover wouldn't be much of an issue. Traffic is low on Melville and Cardero so not much of an issue there
  • Is in a central location for the West End, unlike with the further Denman
  • Provides direct Expo Line access for the West End, no need for a pointless transfer

I honestly think if they charged an extra $0.75 fare for these two stations, the extension could pay itself off.

Nitpicks:
- Cardero's kind of a nothingburger - such a compromise means that both stations would be a 2-3 block walk to anything people actually want to go to.
- English Bay's a dead end. If this one's going to tie into a second line coming in from Stanley Park and the First Narrows, by all means, but if it's on its own then it needs to serve the whole region.
- Service to Waterfront gets cut in half. That probably makes it DOA.

Maybe this?

The simplest way to do it is have trains arrive at Waterfron inbound and then the sign will say "Train to West End" it will reverse out and goto the west end. Then on the reverse trip it would either tail track or go into the outbound platform.

I reckon it would be quite a project to make a modification to the Dunsmuir tunnel

So? What is important is where the stations are. Cardero is the best because it's the best alignment if you don't want to dig under a bunch of buildings to make a curve. The stations are both in the centre of their areas, and keep in mind that most people going to the West End are going to residences, and since the density is pretty even around there, the best location is in the centre. Going to English Bay Beach is longer and more expensive and has a reduced walkshed.

Actually it would allow for it to continue across False Creek/English Bay in the future. Not really a dead end. Extending the Expo Line to West Van is just a weird idea because there's barely any density there to justify it. It makes way more sense to have a second narrows alignment to serve the north shore.

.

Again, frequencies are so high, and will only get higher, that this isn't much of an issue. This is especially less of an issue once a north shore line would go in. Waterfront is the last station in the line, so it's not like all of downtown is getting reduced service.

It would be an extension of it, not so much you would have to do to the existing tunnel itself.

Unlike other forums, this one has too many newbs dreaming out loud and hijacking discussions about transit that's actually happening now. Hence the Fantasy thread.

Some taxi driver decided to ram the articulated part of a trolley bus downtown. Green light? Time to gun it.
