Come on now CMD. You know that these are more problematic than 'adding amenity' for certain areas and that area is well served by the one on 105st north of Jasper, Devine's, G&R to the West, ICE District and Jasper/100st.

104 Street doesn't need another within a block.

It's already got a hub of challenges that has continued to grow in recent years.

Just stoooooop. I bet on a liquor store/population density basis this is no different then what exists in Oliver, Strathcona, and most suburban neighbourhoods.

There are two within two blocks and that corner has become quite a bit more sketchy in recent years which only will be exacerbated by that kind of addition.

Today I shopped for black rum at the Real Canadian Liquor store in ICE District and then the Arena Liquor store in the Crash Hotel before I grabbed the last bottle of Coruba at Liquor Nerds on 105 Street.

What that told me is that I can appreciate the choice of liquor stores in the downtown core, especially if they carry certain brands that are harder to come by. I could have easily driven to a Wine & Beyond store at Southgate Mall or in Windermere for that black rum but I chose downtown.

My bigger issue is that while there certainly is some positive momentum, that this article is suggesting Downtown Edmonton is 'hitting its stride' with what, the addition of a flag store, tea shop and 'jewelry, crystals and spiritual tools' emporium?

I'm sorry, but while it is good to see some commercial (CRU) spaces being filled, the Downtown retail scene continues to be an absolute embarrassment for a city of Edmonton's size.

Grants to encourage some new businesses are also helpful, but not a particularly good sign or reflection of the health of one's retail scene; the other notables are simply moving chairs around.

Again, I think there is positive momentum and more people returning to the core, safety improving and a few new projects that will inject some new life, but let me be very clear that the retail scene is underwhelming (being kind) at the best of times and distressing at others.

Downtown retail really needs the north edge and Jasper East to start to infill, and some more residential in the core too. It's going to take a lot of work to turn around downtown retail to be a destination for those outside - but it really should look after those in the area already. Chicken and egg scenario.

Downtown retail will come back with more residential density. That's the silver bullet. Sure some dated retail space will need to be repositioned, that's an investment owners will need to make. But having more people living downtown will spur demand.

If by repositioning you mean the demolition of the old Eaton Centre, then I'm board with you!

I would agree that repositioning can only go so far. ECC West is a dated retail design format and it's probably best to start from scratch, at least for a significant part of it.

Some may have noticed that there's a strip of CRU's being demo'd at South Edmonton Common, I have heard there will be a Decathlon store taking its place. Not sure when it would open, guessing sometime late 2025
