Cargo does not pay the bills on any AC flight. Cargo is always an add on to passenger service.
WRT red-eye flights, these are extremely profitable for AC for the following reasons:
(1) Connection to Eastern Canada, Eastern USA, Carribean, South America flights is very easy with red eye aircraft. For example if you are flying YYC-DCA the last morning flights that is acceptable leaves at 11am. Otherwise one is taking the red eye.
(2) Repositioning aircraft back to YYZ base. If there were no red eye flights, aircraft would congregate on the Western half of the continent, requiring surplus capacity in the morning or forgoing later east bound transcon. The crux of the problem is YYZ and YUL night time curfew means the last east bound transcon is 6:15pm local. However flights continue to arrive well into the night. This creates the aircraft back log in Western Canada.
