The icing on the cake here is that it wasn't a greedy developer (with greedy developers, I at least understand the motives and, heck, we do have property rights in this country, much as I do think landmarking is a valuable civic institution and should be greatly expanded by the city).
In this case, it was a 'non-profit' (?) Episcopalian Church wreaking the architectural/history devastation. Not only that, but a church that is as history-rich an institution as this city has. And one with money out the ears to boot.
Most 'net-negative' development where we lose a valuable piece of architecture for crap is at least not senseless. The sense is pure profit motive. This one is just bizarre.
