Ringing in 2020 in Auckland, New Zealand (138 photos)
I am currently in the middle of a trip to New Zealand and Australia. I started off the trip in Auckland, where I celebrated the arrival of 2020. Here's a look at some of what I saw while out & about in the city from December 28 - January 1. The weather was pretty close to ideal and I really enjoyed exploring the city and harbour!
Checking out Albert Park in downtown Auckland
The view from Sky Tower
Downtown Auckland
Visiting Devonport which is located just northeast of downtown Auckland across the harbor
On the ferry heading back across the bay to downtown Auckland
The beautiful Auckland Ferry Terminal
Downtown Auckland waterfront/Viaduct Basin
A couple photos from the newly developing Wynyard Quarter neighborhood
Walking along Ponsonby Road in the Ponsonby neighborhood of Auckland
Myers Park just off Karangahape Road (K Road), which is also where I opted to view the fireworks on New Year’s Eve
I took a relatively short ferry ride from downtown Auckland to Waiheke Island to visit various vineyards & wineries located on the island.
Now for a little more exploring of downtown Auckland from the morning of New Years Eve (before most people were up and out & about)
After wandering around downtown, I headed up into the Auckland Domain to check out the gardens and visit the Auckland War Memorial Museum
Directly east of the Auckland Domain is the great Parnell neighborhood. It was probably my favorite neighborhood but for some reason I didn’t take many photos.
The view of Hobson Bay from the Parnell neighborhood.
As I made my way to Mount Eden, I passed through the Newmarket area, which appears to be the main shopping destination for Auckland outside of downtown.
The views atop Mount Eden were impressive!
Looking down to the Mount Eden neighborhood to the south & southwest of Mount Eden
A cute little commercial corridor in the Mount Eden neighborhood
The homes in Mount Eden reminded me of homes I’ve seen in central and northern California
I love trains/rail transit and had planned on taking the train from the Kingsland station to the terminal at Britomart in downtown Auckland, but unfortunately during the holiday break most of the rail service was replaced with bus service. But here’s a look at the Kingsland station and a beautiful building next to it
And now a few shots of the fireworks from the first major city in the world to ring in the new year!

Looks like a warmer Seattle. I can dig it.

I just love the opposite season timing in downunder cuz I just hate winter hate it so much cuz it's too cold to have any decent life when it. 1/4 of life in a year just been wasted in winter.

if you are staying, i understand, it looks very, very nice over there.
I wish I could stay! I can now understand why Sydney & Melbourne consistently rate among the top 10 most livable cities. The quality of life here is amazing! (when it isn't smoky, *sigh*)
Auckland really looks beautiful and thrieving, a shame New Zealand is on the other side of the planet from Sweden! Great Sky tower fireworks and other pics!
