IIRC, I think population decline year over year only occurred in one or two years in the 90's and it was a really small amount.

Granted, but more importantly there was a multi year stagnation. Maybe no decline, but the city wasn't certainly in a rut.

Someone should tell the U.N. to check Stats Canada.

Data Source: United Nations - World Population Prospects

I'm guessing they missed the real immigration growth here over the last few years.

From CBC news website today (Aug 15/24):

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manit...tion-1.7293887

836,250 in the city proper.

935,500 in the CMA.

Not too shabby!

From the article:

"The Winnipeg CMA is anticipated to reach one million people by 2031 — two years ahead of the previous projection, the report notes.

Winnipeg itself is not expected have one million residents until 2046, which is in line with the previous projection."

It depends what immigration drops to as well as if interprovincial out migration slows. I think that depends on many factors. If businesses here demand more workers, we may have to lobby fo more immigrants.

So...I'm predicting Winnipeg's CMA will be somewhere between 975,000-980,000 by middle of 2026.

Love the discussion on the CMA population ^ 980,000 by middle 2026 sounds pretty minty. I wonder what kind of numbers we’ll see in the next couple of years, should be interesting to see.

The last thing we need right now is more people. With housing, inflation, and strains on our infrastructure and health care, I now would be happy if the population froze at 950,000 for the remainder of the decade.

We need to play catch up, especially in regards to housing.

I agree with your comment but that won't happen. Politicans are in the pocket of certain immigrant groups and business interests. We will continue to see unprecedented levels of immigration during the worst housing and affordability crisis this country has ever seen. The Canadian dream is pretty much dead for the working class and working poor that wish to move up. They have been locked out, the door has been shut on them.
