Jean Wallace had, of course, lost custody of the two boys in her divorce from Tone a couple of years earlier. In the interim, though, her life had stabilized with the marriage to Cornel Wilde and Tone's orderly life had unraveled with his well-publicized, near fatal Barbara Payton/Tom Neal serial kerfuffle.
