Do we know how big the lot is?
It's only a fraction of the size of Gary Barnett's planned development on 8th Avenue. This will be 300,000 sf.

It will probably look like this unfortuantely...

RIU Hotels & Resorts touches down in the city of New York. The chain has just entered into a contract to purchase a plot in the heart of Manhattan, just a stone’s throw away from Times Square.

To be specific, the Riu Plaza New York Times Square will be situated where 8th Avenue meets 46th Street, surrounded by the most famous theatres on Broadway and next to ‘Restaurant Row’, an area that is home to modern and original restaurants which invite travellers to sample the latest gastronomic trends.

Another major attraction of this prime location is its proximity to the city’s main attractions such as Central Park, Carnegie Hall and the luxurious boutiques on Fifth Avenue.

Luis Riu, CEO of RIU Hotels & Resorts, has guaranteed that “the opening of our first hotel in New York is a dream come true. With this new project we will offer our most loyal customers, who have come to our holiday destinations for almost 60 years, the opportunity to discover the most famous and visited city in the world with us”.

As a five star hotel, the Riu Plaza New York Times Square will be a modern building in the heart of the international capital of business and its opening is planned for mid-2015. The future hotel, which will have over 600 rooms, is an addition to the collection of modern hotels in the Riu Plaza range. The hotel will have modern décor, elegant rooms and the warm and professional service that is characteristic of all hotels in the chain.

Restaurant, bar, café with ‘take away’, gym, executive lounge, wireless internet access. The new Riu Plaza New York Times Square will have all the facilities you could need for an excellent stay in the city for business or pleasure. All the rooms will enjoy wireless internet access, a coffee machine and a minibar. The hotel will also offer family rooms and executive rooms which will form part of the exclusive Crown Level, with extra amenities and free access to the executive lounge.

The international RIU chain was founded by the Riu family in 1953 as a small holiday firm and is still owned by the family’s third generation. The company specialises in sun and sand holiday resorts. More than 60% of its resorts offer RIU’s acclaimed all-inclusive by RIU formula. With the inauguration of its first urban hotel in 2010, RIU widens its range of product with a new city hotel product line called Riu Plaza.

RIU Hotels & Resorts now has more than 100 hotels in 16 countries and 25,000 employees which welcome over 3.2 million guests a year. RIU is currently the world’s 30th ranked chain (according to HOTELS magazine in 2011), one of the Caribbean’s most popular and the fourth largest in Spain.
