Located at the mouth of the Niagara River and incorporated as a town in 1792, Niagara-On-The-Lake was once the capital of Upper Canada and was the site of many battles in the War of 1812. Today, with the Shaw Festival theatre, historic sites, and Niagara Falls and many wineries nearby, it is a major tourist destination. The town makes a great effort to live up to its reputation as one of Canada's prettiest towns and has a considerable collection of well-kept early 19th century Georgian and Neo-Classical architecture.
