Corporation to take up works using premium FAR amount

With the State government relaxing the conditions in the use of premium floor area ratio (FAR) amount, the Mangaluru City Corporation has proposed to take up works on laying pavements and storm water drains in 11 areas here using the premium FAR amount of Rs. 100 crore, Mayor Harinath has said.

The State government had permitted use of this amount for works such as shifting of utility lines, construction of bus bays and bus shelters and payment of compensation for acquisition of lands necessary of widening roads.

When the government planning to construct busbays let them do it in a better way by integrating other modes. What I suggest is autorickshaw bays and bicycle bays along with busbays. Autorickshaw bays will allow people to opt for autorickshaw in case of delayed arrival of bus or when there is rush. Busbay cum shelter with facilities like toilets should have autorickshaw and bicycle bays at the back of the busshelter or adjacent to it. Even there could be facility for parking two wheelers so that people can come upto busstop from home with their own bicycle or twowheeler, park them and continue their journey by bus and at the destination end they can use bicycle or twowheeler available for rent. If space is constraint then we can think of multilayer busbays with parking facility for rickshaws & bicycles at underground or upper floor of busshelter.
We can even think of buses with facilities to carry bicycles in the next phase of smart city planning.
