Research centre launched in Bantakal

A Centre of Excellence for Research in Artificial Intelligence (& machine learning) was inaugurated at the Sri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM) at Bantakal in Udupi district on Wednesday.

The centre is being established in association with Cere Labs Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai.

Wish SMVITM will also focus on Ayurinformatics in association with ayurvedic colleges in Udupi. How to apply Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning to the domain of Ayurveda is an interesting area of study. There are already a few institutes in our country working on Ayurinformatics. Hope this will also contribute towards health cruise tourism in a big way around Mangalore-Udupi.

Meet the Researcher Shining Her Laser on Relics

“Our lab has developed an oral cancer screening device that can detect cancer at early stages,” she (Surya Harikrishnan) informed me. “What we do is shine a laser into the oral cavity. The light emitted by the tissue is collected by a probe itself, and this is fed into a spectrograph.” Studies have shown that there is a marked difference between spectra of healthy persons, cancer-affected persons, and those prone to oral cancer – so, by comparing spectra, Manipal scientists have managed to show that it is possible to diagnose cancer early.

Photonics has so many applications – so why don’t we use it to study ancient pieces like archaeological specimens, she thought. “The first thing people ask is if we are doing dating (estimating the age of samples). No, this is not for dating. My study is based on pre-dated samples,” she said. “Say I get an ancient sample. I can study its elemental and structural composition using laser analysis.”

Researchers at SOLS discover tools to manage nutrition better

MANIPAL: Researchers at department of biophysics, School of Life Sciences (SOLS), Manipal University and Institute of Biophotonics, National Yang-Ming University, Taipei, Taiwan have developed a stokes polarimeter based on non-linear optical microscopy to investigate starch gelatinization. The finding is published in Nature Publishing Group journal Scientific Reports entitled Investigating starch gelatinization through stokes vector resolved second harmonic generation microscopy.

Minister of State lays foundation stone for GTTC in Uppoor

It was known for its precision and quality in the development and manufacture of sophisticated moulds, dies and tools. The GTTC had added new technologies to the existing set of advanced equipment such as CAD/CAM, CNC machines for tooling, precision components, rapid prototyping, vacuum casting and others, which were helpful for small industries.

The GTTC would be constructed on five acres of land, which had been acquired from the Government High School here.

The GTTC would be built at a cost of Rs 43 crore. Already worth Rs 9.43 crore had been floated for the GTTC.

Nearly 200 students could get admission annually once the GTTC started functioning here, he said.
