Honestly, I'd say that this design is an improvement over the former design. While I liked it's industrial theming, the color was just too loud. If it'd been a tan or very light yellow perhaps I would've liked it a lot more.
As for you all wishing for more classical architecture, you may be excited to hear that we seem to be heading back down that route. Multiple new buildings in NYC have been designed in that style, and while in general New York can only loosely be used to predict nationwide architectural trends, I think that between the fact that everyone can agree that they're pretty, and that they're beginning to get to the point where they are a bit more cost-effective to build, we might be seeing more soon.
In fact, I am willing to bet money that the site at 8th and Market will be at least slightly classically designed.
