Phase four: MRPL may focus on petrochemical products
Quote:
Considering the Union government’s push for electric vehicles and those run by natural gas, the State’s oil refining major, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL), is mulling over focussing more on petrochemicals than fuel when its phase-four expansion becomes a reality.

It will take time for transport vehicles, namely buses and trucks, to switch over to alternative fuel and they will continue to require high-speed diesel.

Polypropylene is the only petrochemical being manufactured by MRPL at its existing facility.

A feasibility — technical as well as economical — study of producing polypropylene in phase four is being undertaken before the company takes a concrete decision on polypropylene production and recommends to its Board, MRPL officials said. About 3 million tonnes of crude is planned to be processed per annum in phase four. MRPL has sought about 960 acres of land for the expansion from the State government and the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board has been entrusted with land acquisition. The government has already issued a final notification under the KIADB Act to acquire lands identified in Permude, Kuthethur, Thenka Yekkar, Mulur, and Kandavara villages surrounding the existing MRPL plant in Mangaluru taluk.

The acquisition process however has not been smooth as landowner farmers have strongly been opposing the acquisition.

Polypropylene is used in a variety of applications, including consumder product packaging, electrical and equipment manufacturing, automobile, household appliances, construction material and other industries. MRPL had produced about 3.88 lakh tonnes of polypropylene in 2018-19 as against 2.94 lakh tonnes in 2017-18.

Good. Let us use Electrical Vehicles and get rid of this useless company which has not generated high end jobs in IT or reserach but polluted our city for the sake of the parched city.

Electric bus plant likely to come up in Mangaluru
Hungarian company to boost e-mobility in Karnataka
Quote:
The Hungarian company (Csepel Holding) has identified 250 acres of land close to the airport in Mangaluru to set up its first manufacturing unit. “We thought they will seek land, but they are ready to purchase a plot on their own,” Savadi said.
Earlier we had a startup called 'Kaniyoor Projects' proposing to set up electrical cars manufacturing unit in DK. Karnataka was also supposed to get Goldstone-BYD (Goldstone pumps in Rs 500 crore for electric bus facility in Karnataka) electric bus plant.

Note that Csepel Holding is also looking for land in Maharashtra near Jawaharlal Nehru Port and the upcoming Navi Mumbai international airport for creating Rs 3,000 crores manufacturing facility. Csepel is also considering other countries in the region to export buses to India - 1. Hence chances of Mangaluru are less as Karnataka government is not aggressive in promoting non-parched regions for industries & research.

Quote:
Work is on for setting up 2 lakh tonne per annum Ductile Iron Spun Pipe Plant, 1.8 LTPA Coke Oven Plant and a 10 MW co-generation Captive Power Plant in Mangaluru.

DISP plant should be a success since Karnataka has no such plant and ductile pipes are in great demand for various water supply projects.
HPCL-MRPL merger plan yet to reach board level: HPCL chief

Why nobody asked HPCL Chief when they are going to shift their R&D facility from the parched city to Mangaluru? Local journalist should at least open their mouth & ask questions relevant to Mangaluru's interest. If journalists don't ask bureaucrats and politicians tough questions then what is the use of journalism?

The CMD (Subba Rao) further said that under the ‘Make In India’ programme, the company had utilised the spare capacity of its pellet plant for tolling purpose to optimise the production capacity and converted the imported ore into pellets. KIOCL also had entered the high-grade new pellet market where the premium is high and is used for making quality steel.

What does quality steel mean? Does it mean marine-grade, medical-grade, automotive-grade steel? Why not they start mining in the sea as mineral exploration is already done by GSI?
