NHAI proposes to convert B C Road-Suratkal highway into six-lane at a cost of Rs 925 crore
Quote:
The proposed width of the road is 60 metres as against the current 30 to 35 metres, and bridges too are proposed to be widened, and new underpasses have been proposed. The highway will also have two-lane service road on both sides. The length of the stretch proposed to be developed is 37 km.

Raichur-Mangaluru economic corridor needs 60 hectares of forest land
Quote:
Near Mudigere, there is a small temple named Bhireshwara and near Nelyadi, there is another shrine named Shishileshwara. These are the two points which connects Mudigere and Nellyadi and the DPR is being prepared for the same. This entire identified route between Bhaireshwara and Shishileshwara to lay new 6-lane road is almost 15 km. And 15 km in which some portion comes under western ghat, requires 60 hectares of forest land.

And for the rest of the portion that forms 15 km including Western Ghats, acquisition of estate owned by Kordes and other private owners is required. This stretch between Mudigere to Nellyadi will be six lane. From Nelyadi, the road has been updated to national highway standards via Bantwal to Mangaluru, he said. Once this DPR gets approval and gets forest clearance, then a new alignment from Mudigere to Hassan via Hanbal will be proposed.

That is why we have to move back coastal people to coast from the parched region. That will reduce traffic both passenger & goods (goods because industrialization for export happens in coast itself) through westernghats and also reduce water requirement in the parched region.

Most dangerous than this is the way westernghats is getting destroyed for Yettinahole project.

MSCL moots design contest to build bus shelters under ‘smart city’ mission in city

A horrible example for bus shelter is in front of currently built St Agnes Junction bus stop. Three steps to claim! Why don't keep the longitudinal slope intact and level with footpath while designing bus stops? Get rid of lateral slope, retain longitudinal slope. Just create benches with varying leg heights on them, if slope is too much then put chairs with varying leg heights. Best way is to keep roads flat near bus stops & junctions. One way to provide rain protection in current design is to put retractable tranaparent shutters on three sides for protection during rainy season or even tarpaulin for current design. Another way may be to increase length and width of roof by constructing extended PVC roofs. (Shop keepers for protection from rain and sun put additional plastic roofs in front with all types of acrobatic ways to turn pedestrian into acrobats to dodge rain water falling from roofs). Ideal bus stop roof should even extend over halted buses so that people can move in and out without getting soaked in rain. Just do it with light plastic material & have suitable process to recycle plastic.

My best suggestion is to generate about 20 MW electricity on top of bus shelters. For this what you need is solar canopy on busstops extending from compound wall to medians of roads further longitudinally on both sides canopy should extend by three to four meters. This makes it difficult for rain to enter to region where people are waiting for buses. People can enter/exit bus easily during rain without affected by it. (Shelters can be extended further to autorikshaw stands but at a smaller height and shelter/walkway of it stretchng below into main bus shelter). Busstops should be covered in between with transparent sheets so to provide natural light during day. Also provide natural ventilation may be using air turbines. Just see that no tree canopies will extend over busstop canopy so to affect solar power generation capacity. And design should be so that shelters can be dismounted and remounted easily during any road alteration works like expansion. All solar panels should be connected to main power grid. I think State Bank, Lady Goschen, Town Hall - AB Shetty Circle, Jyothi, Kankanady can all together can generate about 1 MW of solar power. There are also enough government lands in vicinity in these places to keep inverters. The canopies may look like petrol bunk canopies with same height. Height restriction barriers can be used at entrances. Rain water should directly flow into drains through pipes without getting on way of pedestrians. On national highways for even solar panels on service roads there could be height requirements. As we know NMPT is looking for space to generate solar power. Even KIOCL, MRPL may be requested/blackmailed for help.

Actually my design for bus stop requires lot of land acquistion for making it multimode with rikshaw & bicycle parking facilties & cycle tracks & I know MCC is never going to do it. And people representative will continue to put big banners with their photographs on footpaths encroached for autostands.

City infrastructure to focus more on pedestrians than vehicles: Senthil
Quote:
Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil on Wednesday said the administration is keen on the holistic development of Mangaluru by ensuring health, safety, and cohesive environment to people under the Smart City project.

Interacting with mediapersons at Meet-the-Press organised at Mangaluru Press Club here, Mr. Senthil said the focus of new infrastructure creation under Smart City project would be more on people rather than vehicles. Roads would have more space to walk while limiting vehicular space.

The entire central business district, including Hampanakatte area, would get a fresh look with wider walkways and bicycle paths after the Smart City project is completed, he said. The administration is keen on developing more public spaces like parks.

Dialogues are initiated among all stakeholders in ensuring pedestrian-friendly infrastructure rather than vehicle-friendly infrastructure. A policy decision would be taken to prevent using public spaces for private vehicles [parking]. Automation of services and utilities would also address many problems the city is facing at present, Mr. Senthil said.
Public transport

Admitting that a robust public transport system would address traffic woes to a considerable extent, Mr. Senthil said attempts are being made to introduce an organised city bus operation system. As a first step, administration has initiated colour-coding of buses and development of an app to get feedback from commuters. The concept would be taken forward to have a PPP for city bus operations.

People have almost forgotten the vast river front abutting the city, Mr. Senthil said, noting that all roads would henceforth lead to the river front.

The very idea behind organising the River Festival on January 12 and 13 was to attract people to the river and tap the tourism potential too.

As people stopped going to river fronts, rivers got polluted with trash and waste water. The administration has urged the government to construct at least 20 floating concrete jetties between Kuloor Bridge and Netravathi Bridge on Phalguni (Gurupura) and Netravathi rivers. Many people are waiting to introduce house boats, floating restaurants and ferry services if boat landing facilities are provided by the government, he said.
Cops for shifting of bus stands to city outskirts

While other cities planning to encourage more buses in CBD and discourage personal vehicles we have these type of strange planners! Isn't just shifting service bus stand sufficient? Make State Bank just another bus stop not a terminal point with increased frequency of city buses.

Pumpwell will be last option for bus terminal, MCC clarifies

What news trying to mean is there is a plan for centralization and decentralization at the same time. Centralizaton is done by having bus terminal near railway station so two modes are integrated. Decentralization by having separate bus terminal for Moodbidri, Karkal, BC Road buses. This means there will be partial integration of buses with trains.

Mangaluru does not need decentralization of service/moffusil buses at this point as population is less. As per MCC plans also population will not cross 20 lakhs till another 30 years or so (my plan is 20 laks for Mangalore, 10 lakhs in between Mangaluru & Udupi, 10 lakhs Udupi around 2050 - a corridor type metro city Mangaluru being a part of this metro city - a metro city with three terminals - Mangaluru, Udupi and one more inbetween integrated with airport terminal). For a huge city with population more than a crore like the parched city decentralization was fine to accommodate more buses running in road of less capacity. To accommodate more buses that city had to either increase capacity of roads by building 10-20 lane roads or decentralization. (Ideally I was given a chance then would have preferred to decentralize:lol: this city itself by dividing it into three or four pieces, that is three or four cities separated by at least 150 km. By doing this I would have stuck to my principle of 'one city - one integrated terminal' may be by having 8 lane roads for population of 40 lakhs). But in Mangaluru having six lane roads are enough to accommodate buses. At the same time we have to discourage personal vehicles so that roads are free for buses. If integrated transportation hub is built for accommodating both buses and railways then outsiders travelling through this hub can exchange buses or trains easily without need to travel in small vehicles from one terminal to another terminal. Ideal plan for a city of 20 lakh population is to have integrated city bus, service bus and train services by discouraging personal vehicles.

Dist admin mulls over integrated transportation hub
Quote:
“We are exploring the possibility of setting up an integrated transportation hub in Padil and developing satellite bus shelters in Kuloor and Pumpwell. The satellite bus stands will be a reality in the future,” Deputy Commissioner said.
I don't know what is this satellite bus stops business. If Padil Transportation Hub provide connection to every place with good frequency in both modes I will be happy to have satellite bus stops as supplementary bus stops. If they stop buses from Udupi at Kuloor without allowing them to proceed further to Padil & Pumpwell then I oppose this. Ideal case could be buses from Udupi being split into two groups one going to Padil directly via Kuloor-Nanthoor and one going via Kuloor to Pumpwell in different routes some may travel via Jyothi (say with frequency of one bus in 20 minutes at least) to Pumpwell and viceversa. In future this can be split further in to two to take Kuloor-Carstreet-StateBank-Jyothi-Pumpwell route also with good frequency in addition to Kuloor-BuntsHostel-Kadri-Pumpwell route when Carstreet-StateBank route is widened. Simliarly to Puttur at least 30 minutes frequency could be provided via Jyothi. In this way you are reducing traffic density at Hampankatta & Jyothi area of service/mofussil buses but without effecting direct connectivity to Udupi & Puttur much. At the same time you can stop any long distance bus to cross pumpwell and enter CBD. I don't have objection if the government stops all long distance buses at Pumpwell or Padil itself.

Shishila-Byrapura Road project: NHAI seeks clearance
Quote:
Regardless of the growing dissent against the destruction of forests in the Western Ghats, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has submitted a detailed application seeking approval for a controversial road project from Shishila (Dakshina Kannada) to Byrapura (Chikkamagaluru). Spanning 278 km, it is part of the ambitious NH-173 road project from Chitradurga to Mangaluru, linking the port with the golden quadrilateral to improve the efficiency of freight movement in the country.
Quote:
Though the forest area is only a state forest, it has evergreen forests. Several rivulets originate from these forests. All of them will be damaged. Also, the non-forest area also has considerable vegetation like Shola forest, Male kaadu and Devara kaadu, which has the same vegetation. All of this has not been taken into consideration. Collectively, the project will lead to a loss of more than 20 lakh trees along the stretch.

Mangaluru may soon have dedicated cycle lanes

Architect starts mapping lanes to make intra-city traffic safe, eco-friendly

The increasing traffic-density even in two-tier cities and the absence of dedicated tracks has made cycling for regular commute next to impossible. Parents, too, don’t feel safe to send their children on a cycle to school.

Taking all these factors into consideration, wildlife conservationist and architect Niren Jain has decided to make an intra-city motor vehicle-free safe bicycle lane map within Mangaluru City.

Niren Jain told BM, "About six months ago, I launched an experiment of mapping non-motorised lanes. I have realised that there are quite a few lanes that can be used as a dedicated cycling lane. There could be some crossovers along the main road, bridges or nalas. Some interventions might be needed from civic authorities.Cycling clubs often dedicate themselves to reaching milestones or means to stay fit and exercise during a holiday or early morning or late evenings. I want to use cycling for regular commute and have been wondering how to do it as road are totally unsafe in the absence of dedicated tracks. There is hardly anyone who uses cycle for regular commute.”

"I want to use cycling for regular commute and have been wondering how to do it as road are totally unsafe in the absence of dedicated tracks"
- Niren Jain, wildlife conservationist

For Niren, the exercise looks really promising. “The initiative is still at its preliminary stage and we need to take it forward with the support from Mangaluru City Corporation. Launched six months ago, I have mapped lanes on and off whenever time allowed. Certain issues such as gradient slopes have to be examined as Mangaluru basically has a hilly terrain. We could probably cut off from one point where we need to go. The focus would be on high-density areas connecting work or education institutes to residential areas.

The moment parents feel that the routes are safe for cyclists, we would probably see a rise in the use of cycles for daily commute. Whenever, I have gone on this exercise, I have realised that it is a totally different Mangaluru that I am exploring even though I have lived in Mangaluru for several years,” he said. Niren is already in discussion with Smart City officials to take this up as a full-fledged project for as part of smart city. If that happens, can come up with a comprehensive report at the earliest. “There is a need to look at several alternative routes to make it a permanent aspect of the city,“ he said.

Work on 2nd truck terminal in M’luru delayed
Quote:
The existing Truck Parking Terminal (TPT) near New Customs House in Panambur is already crammed with trucks. The terminal, inaugurated in 2001 by then New Mangalore Port Trust's Chairman Captain R Ramkumar, has a capacity to park over 300 trucks. But due to uneven surface the terminal is able to accommodate only around 150 trucks.

With statistics revealing that NH 66 witnesses two truck movement per minute and 80 truck movements per hour, the government has decided to build another truck terminal.

Second terminal

...

Sources in DUTT (Devaraj Urs Truck Terminus Limited) told that land for the second terminal was identified in Mukka near Surathkal. Parliamentary Secretary to Chief Minister and MLC Ivan D'Souza had recently questioned the delay in setting up the second terminal near Mangaluru during the Legislative Council sessions held in Belagavi.

As the district administration had not handed over the land to DUTT, the work on second truck terminal had been delayed, sources added.

20-yr plan

MUDA Commissioner Srikanth Rao said: “We have to plan development of Mangaluru City keeping in mind the next 20 years. We need to have a traffic control mechanism to avoid jams,” he noted.

“Though the ring road concept was visualised two decades ago for Mangaluru, it has not materialised so far. The Mangala Corniche ring road in Mangaluru has not materialised. Easing traffic will make the city smart in its correct sense,” he observed.
What was the view on Kundapur-Kasaragod Metro network? Whether interstate-metro, interstate-ring roads are allowed now? What we want is people using transit-oriented system should stay near stations & stops on mass transportation network. Those who want to use personal vehicles should stay away in suburbs or rural areas or wherever transit-oriented system is not available. Whether Konkan railway will run trains from Kasaragod to Kundapur once it completes doubling works?
