e_r--it's definitely a rose bush; but the proportionately rather small leaves and the way it's branching are both a little unlike mainstream roses. They had a lot of interest in so-called shrub roses then--which were often varieties bred from wild rose species, so they'd have a different "look"; it's possibly one of them.
