I think China's smog problem is exaggerated. I was in Hangzhou and Shanghai in May 2015 for a week, and in Beijing in Apr 2016 for 3 days. On both trips I brought face masks thinking I would need them, but the skies were perfectly clear every single day, and the air felt fine.

BTW it was awesome to see the 632m Shanghai Tower in person. It's the only megatall I've ever seen. On the other hand, I don't recall seeing as many skyscrapers in Beijing as shown in the photos above. They must have added lots of skyscrapers in just a couple years.
