Fourth Street west of Hope

OK, let me start by saying that this picture has vexed my OCD addled brain for over a year:

Source: http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/assets.../AAA-EN-106-31

It is captioned, "View looking north on Boylston between First and Temple, Los Angeles, 1937" and includes a Hotel Phiben. However, none of the pieces seemed to fit. I finally had a breakthrough when my google search turned up a "Hotel Philbin" at 1015 W 4th Street that was torn down in 1958 for a freeway.

I then rediscovered this pic from an old post that confirmed that the mislabeled pic is actually a view looking west from 4th & Hope on Bunker Hill.

LAPL

the photo is not dated, it shows the Briggs on the south side of 4th, and then the hildreth mansion on the north side of 4th.

is that the Engstrum poking it's head up a few buildings to the left of the central library, (or is that the top of the tower of the normal school)?

this photo nicely shows that until the construction of the miserable 4th street viaduct, 4th did not extend heading west further than hope street, due to the steep terrain.
This forgotten corner of old LA was eventually obliterated by the Harbor Freeway and the 4th Street viaduct.
