traditional architecture and materials is becoming the open air mall du jour of China's cities. Coming off the back of the success of the heavily restored Xintiandi district in Shanghai, which has become a chic boutique and cafe happy destination now, each city wants to emulate the economic rewards to be reaped. Hongkou's Jewish district and the French Concession is following suit in Shanghai while Beijing is seeing its hutongs in Qianmen being rebuilt and restored, and its Ming/ Qing dynasty villages becoming upscale resorts. Chongqing so far has 3 Old City's.
