Students from seven Kaohsiung elementary schools that are all more than a century old attend an event in the city marking the 100th anniversary of its name change to Kaohsiung. In 1920, the Japanese colonial government changed the city’s Chinese name to Kaohsiung, which is pronounced “takao” in Japanese, the city’s name until the change.
