Incheon to manage $200M project of new Duhok airport in Kurdistan

SEOUL, S. Korea, — Incheon Airport has signed a three-year contract worth $9.03 million to project manage the construction of a new Duhok Airport in Kurdistan in Iraq's north.

Beginning in June this year, the South Korean company has been appointed by the Duhok Governorate – under the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) – to oversee the entire management project for three years.

The contract includes supervising the master plan and the subcontracts, as well as managing the engineering and construction quality, processes,www.ekurd.net costs and test operations for the construction of Duhok Airport.

The company said it would send around ten experts to Duhok to oversee the project.

There has never been an airport in the region, but the province is now planning to invest $200 million in a facility that can accommodate 500,000 mppa.

Lebanese-company Dar al-handersaht has recently finished the master planning and design for the gateway, and the selection of constructors is now underway.

Between February 2009 and March 2011, Incheon Airport was also the project manager at nearby Erbil International Airport.

C.W Lee, president of Incheon Airport, said: “This contract is highly meaningful in that it is our second big deal in the Middle East, following the case of the Erbil Airport management backup.

“Building on the leading brand power of Incheon Airport, we will clinch other similar deals down the road and further our reputation as an A-list airport company.”
