Two months is an eternity for a guy who has just played two seasons of hockey. I’d be much more forgiving if Matthews didn’t think so highly of himself, but when you want to be the best paid player you’re going to have higher expectations than being top 15 in projected points. Matthews needs to bring something to justify that contract.

Matthews has regressed in virtually every aspect of his game this season. He doesn’t battle for pucks any more, makes no second effort on his plays, and stands around admiring the puck when it’s in his own. He’s still coasting off a blistering hot start that inflates his PPG, but even that is looking less and less impressive when you consider that goal scoaring is up league wide.
