Optimization of traffic flow for cars I believe. I think pressing the button doesn’t give you a walk signal and sooner than the
default timing but if the button is NOT pressed it may give priority to cars for a little longer, depending on the time of day. Or something like that. The buttons are very pedestrian hostile. I’m both driver and pedestrian and live in an area with a ton of stores, restaurants, shops, etc. in walking distance. So I walk a lot and those buttons are infuriating.
