i just got back from a getaway weekend in charleston. it was my first time there. what a wonderful and charming and well preserved little city they have down there. it did remind me of savannah a little bit, but it wasn't quite as cutely organized as savannah with all of those neat little squares spaced so evenly and regularly throughout the street grid. charleston, while still mostly gridded, is more haphazard in layout, which makes for fun strolling.
we also toured fort sumter as well as the USS yorktown aircraft carrrier museum in the harbor. lots of really cool military history stuff down there to go along with a ton of delicious restaurants and beautiful 18th & 19th century vernacular architecture. its the perfect kind of small city to just wander around aimlessly and discover stuff as you go.
