More Apartments for Edgewater

Apartments planned on a rare empty North Side site
A developer is proposing to build a six-story apartment building on rare piece of empty land on Sheridan Road in Edgewater.

It’s not clear how long the parcel, two-thirds of an acre at 5950 N. Sheridan Road, has been vacant, but the developer, Jason Vondrachek of Quest Realty Group, said locals believe it’s been empty for at least 30 years, and possibly more than 40. The site, on the west side of Sheridan, is between the landmark Prairie Style Colvin House, a remnant of the street’s historical strip of mansions, and a five-story apartment building in a district now dominated by highrises.

The building, called Loft Lago and designed by Chicago-based Hanna Architects, would have 59 units in a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Premium units will be along the east side, on Sheridan Road, where most of the windows have at least partial views of Lake Michigan. A rooftop deck will provide unobstructed views to the water over the Emanuel Congregation synagogue across the street.
