I've never seen it as a competition. Nobody cares about the third world cities putting up 2,000 towers (or 10,000 ft ones for as far as I care), I care about the look of Manhattan's skyline. Period.

i will say that it is a competition to developing nations, though as for Manhattan,i love height but its just not economically practical at the moment.
