I emailed the Skyscraper Museum in New York yesterday to see if they had any pictures of the observatory and the Director (Carol Willis I believe) said that the building never had an observatory. She mentioned under the spire there being offices and a gentlemens club, But no observatory.

This rather surprised me as I have read on numberous occassions that 40 Wall had an observatory the closed sometime in the 40's and that Severance had argued his building taller because its tallest floor the observatory was about 75 feet higher than Chryslers highest occupied floor which was its observatory.

Does anyone have any supporting information on the observatory of 40 Wall that I could send to the Skyscraper Museum?
