That said, the cost of the Olympics has grown to exceed the benefits it delivers IMO. There are probably better ways to spend $15-20 billion than on hosting a two week sports event.

No probably about it.
That being said, the tide has really turned against the IOC. The fact they're trying to lock up candidates a decade in advance is a sign of desperation.
Not too many countries banging down their door these days.
