I don't live in NYC with that said, I know the media likes to blow things up for ratings. I don't think NYC is as bad as people (most who have probably never been there) say it is. I do think crime is on the rise, you (not you personally) cannot deny that, but it's not 70's - 80's level. Last time I was there was early '21 when they were just waking up from covid. There were still some restrictions, but not too bad. I know things were different during that time, but I had no issues. The biggest problem I had there was the smell of weed almost everywhere I went. That gets tiresome. Add that to the massive influx of migrants (I'm not here to debate this), people have a bad view of the city.
