This is the logo for the City of St. John's:
And here is our Coat of Arms:
Most of the crest's symbols relate to Saint John, our patron Saint, which was an important thing for a city to have in the 1500s. The man on the left is a 15th century sailor holding the date 1497, when Giovanni Caboto became the first European to set foot in Newfoundland since the Vikings 500 years earlier. The man on the right is a 16th century sailor holding the date 1583, which was when, under Elizabeth the First, the (then) village of Sao Joao (St. John's) and Terra Nova (the island of Newfoundland) were claimed by Britain (prior to that it was Basque, Breton, and Norman).
