Reminds me (for some reason) of a purported exchange between Mrs. Potter Palmer and Mrs. Astor sometime in the 1890's. Mrs. Palmer was bragging about her new 24-carat gold decorated china dinner service for 100. Mrs. Astor replied: "But my dear, what do you do when you have a LARGE party?"
And then there was the time that Bertha Palmer hosted Princess Eulalia, the Infanta of Spain, at a luncheon when Her Royal Highness represented Spain at the Columbian Exposition. Her Royal Highness was insulted that she was hosted by an "innkeeper's wife."
