The NY Wheel fired Mammoet-Starneth LLC, the Wheel's designer and builder, in May for failing "to meet multiple design and construction deadlines," said Cristyne Nicholas, spokesperson for The New York Wheel.

Since then, work on the actual Wheel structure was halted and the project has been indefinitely delayed.

..."The New York Wheel is in advanced negotiation with American Bridge Company, the builder of the Las Vegas High Roller Observation Wheel and the new Tappan Zee Bridge, to take over and complete the erection of The New York Wheel, " said Nicholas.

"As part of that transition, the cranes previously provided by Mammoet are not required and will be removed from the project site in order to make way for replacement equipment. Work on the terminal building continues. The New York Wheel expects to announce a new completion date in the near future," she added.

Before Mammoet-Starneth was fired, the city Buildings Department uncovered an issue with some of the welds on Wheel legs, which arrived at Brooklyn Marine terminal last fall.

The city Buildings Department said the problem uncovered by a special Buildings Department inspector, was "minor."

The issue involved less than 10 welds, of which the largest was a few inches long, according to the Buildings Department. The legs consist of thousands of welds.

According to the Buildings Department, the agency has not received an engineer's report certifying that the welds in the legs have been fixed.

"Keep in mind that all welds in any construction project are fully inspected as required by the New York City Buildings Department. As is the normal course following these inspections, minor remediation to a component is not atypical in this sort of construction project and construction is proceeding," said Nicholas.
