I think this is the gasometer in the background. Is that Chinese writing on the top in this 1948 aerial?
Historic Aerials
The gasometer disappeared sometime before the 1972 aerial. The location now appears to be a parking lot for Southern California Gas Company trucks.
The tall structure to the left of the gasometer and under the reddish spot in the color photo is the 11-story Hollywood Storage Co. building at 1025 N. Highland Avenue.
