Although the newer frenchie second empire infill/teardown replacement stuff is somewhat jarring in contrast to the otherwise classic/forward urban American feel of much of Chicago. Mansard roofs never looked comfortable in Chicago to me, anyway. They seem out of place for a city obsessed with
getting shit done and a melding of function and form, and the old examples even look a little dishonest - like a grudging nod to the fashion that the city deep down thought was bullshit.
