^I believe the cap for buildings in LIC is 800 ft. There are multiple 600+ ft towers going up on the LIC waterfront right now. Those are closer to the subway, the 7 train, than the Greenpoint Landing towers are to the G train. The 7 train gets you to Grand Central in 1 stop whereas the G will take you up to LIC or down to Brooklyn. It's not quite as easy to get to Manhattan from Greenpoint.

There's a city bus that runs through Greenpoint, so the transit connections aren't horrible. There are also ferries along the river that some commuters take. I think the real issue is that the taller towers in LIC along the waterfront are primarily affordable housing while the ones at Greenpoint Landing are not.
