Cathy Thuringer, the new business unit leader for Trammell Crow Co.’s Phoenix market, wants to grow the company’s local operations.

She assumes the role from Jim Mahoney, who will continue to serve as a principal. Thuringer, who joined Trammell Crow in 1988 and has served as a principal since 2014, will be responsible for exploring new product lines. She spoke to the Business Journal about her plans.

What’s the difference in the role of the principal and business unit leader? To become principal, you basically have to be successful on development deals and show good business acumen. You are voted on by the executive committee to become principal. It’s an achievement level in our company. Business unit leader is a leadership role, where you lead operations of the Phoenix business unit in all aspects of development.

What’s your vision for the company? We’ve got a great team here, a very talented team. We are one of the most active developers in Phoenix, and we want to continue that. We want to continue to be able to find opportunities to develop, bring jobs and create value to stakeholders. I want it to continue to be successful for the younger talent in our office who will take on leadership here as well.

What areas do you plan to expand into? One of the things we have not been into here is the health care industry. There’s a plan to try to feel out opportunities in the health care sector here locally.

Where are you with the multifamily project at Seventh Avenue and Osborn Road? The first phase of units should be delivered by the end of [April]. Full completion will be a couple of months after that.

What about the Fillmore multifamily project in downtown Phoenix? We will be breaking ground in the next 30 days.
