HARTFORD | Connecticut's capitol city

Let's check out Hartford, Connecticut’s capitol city. We’ll cover downtown, the South End, and bits of the West End.

Starting on an unseasonably mild December 28, 2008 with lots of melting snow.

Farmington Ave on the West End, about half a mile from the city limits.

Skyline from Broad St

Close ups of the capitol building

“Attack on an Indian fort” (or "Puritains being A-holes")

Travelers Tower

Apartments overlooking Bushnell Park

Skyline from capitol steps

Lighten up, Francis

The one on the right looks like she’s playing baseball

Russ St, from Oak St

Oak approaching Park St, the neighborhood gets a bit grittier

Park St, one of the main commercial streets of the largely Puerto Rican South End

Squire St

Buckingham St

This area is the edge of a large surface parking buffer that separates downtown from much of the South End

Capitol Ave. This was a nice block, although it is only a block away from the grim scene on Hudson Street a few pics ago.

The edge of Bushnell Park, Hartford’s main downtown greenspace.

It is a nicely landscaped park. Hartford native Frederick Law Olmstead was busy designing New York’s Central Park so he had a buddy do Bushnell Park. Blanking on the guy’s name…

Chance of forest fires in downtown Hartford is LOW today, informs the Man-bear. Breathe easier…

State capitol looming over the park

A brief tour of downtown on December 20th, 2008. It had been snowing all day, but I probably didn’t need to point that out…

Trumbull St

Travelers Tower

Main Street at Central Row

The Cheney Building on Main, designed by H.H. Richardson.

Financial Plaza area

Pratt St

Nice, albeit blurry, details. We should start putting things like heads and animals on buildings again.

Back lot on Asylum St

New tower, the tallest residential building in New England outside Boston.

A snowy Bushnell Park

Skyline from the west, on Broad St

Lawrence St, on the West End

Capitol Ave under I-84 ramps

Howabout a stroll around Bushnell Park on another unseasonably warm day, Thanksgiving Day 2007.

Connecticut’s tallest

Clinton Street, off the park

The capitol has grown on me. I thought it was a bit fussy looking at first, but I have surrendered to its gothic charm.

The oldest triumphal arch in the US, for those keeping score at home.

Jewell St

...and one random shot of West Hartford, cuz I have it.
