Yeah Vancouver does lack some sort of iconic supertall that just screams "THIS IS VANCOUVER, BIATCH !" kind of like CN Tower for Toronto, The Bow for Calgary (in the future, that is), Eiffel Tower for Paris. I mean, Canada Place is nice, but it's not extremely obvious to see when you see the city's skyline. Vancouver needs some sort of big and nice public plaza in downtown with an iconic landmark so people can go there as THE place to celebrate in Canada Day, New Year, Christmas... etc
Right now I feel there's a lack of public space for people to gather and celebrate in Vancouver and all the celebrations are spread around the entire metro area.
