Milwaukee County will sell a downtown property near the lakefront at a discounted price for the proposed Couture apartment high-rise, under an agreement approved Thursday by the County Board.
The board voted 12-4 to grant a purchase option for the Downtown Transit Center, 909 E. Michigan St., to Couture developer Barrett Visionary Development. The "no" votes were from supervisors Mark Borkowski, Gerry Broderick, Willie Johnson and Michael Mayo, some of whom cited the Couture's link to the proposed downtown streetcar.
If the project proceeds, Barrett Visionary Development, led by Rick Barrett, would demolish the underused transit building and build the $122 million Couture. The 44-story development would feature 302 high-end apartments, with an average monthly rent of $2,300, about 50,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space, and a 570-space parking structure.
