From a semi outsider's perspective, I would say San Antonio's downtown has several hearts. There is of course the Alamo which the city is famous for. It broke ground in 1744. There's a large plaza around it and there are a lot of shops and restaurants nearby. There's also the Riverwalk which snakes around downtown with a lot of restaurants and shops lining it. And there's Main Plaza near the San Fernando Cathedral. That cathedral broke ground in 1738. And there is the Rivercenter Mall. San Antonio's downtown is still really dense. They haven't really lost many buildings.
