I also think the reason they have allowed development so close to the north branch is because of the Fanshawe Dam.

Regarding soccer, it's funny. We live a 5 minute walk from the Byron sportsplex, and a 3 minute drive to southwest optimist, and when my daughter played, we had to take her up to Hyde Park to a couple fields up there. The west end doesn't have multi-field complexes because developers only want to put the bare minimum into greenspace when they see how much money they can get for homes. The east side parks have been around for decades, back when land was cheap and even building lots were large. You also had large industries with sports fields as part of their property, such as 3M and Firestone (Accuride now). The west end is still underserved by decent quality arenas as well, even with the new Bostwick complex open.
